“Okay Jess, this is for you. You requested it and you got it. I’m here with Kevin at the Vortex – What’s the machine?” It’s a Vortex 4200 by RTI Digital. We’re base in Fort Collins, Colorado. Vortex 4200 is a high-speed inkjet printer powered by Memjet. Yes. It’s an aqueous dye, inks. We have 5 heads, 42-inch width printing, capable of printing up to 1600 by 1600 dpi and up to a foot a second.
“Yes. This thing is printing really fast.” It’s a 2 roll feed device, so it rolls to cut and you can set the line. They can print up to 30 feet or more, continuous.
“Yes. At least an 8-foot map just came out of here, 2 seconds ago. In like, 3.2 seconds, not even.” 8-foot map, 8 seconds.
“8 seconds. Okay. I exaggerated a little, but still. It’s coming now? Here it comes. This is crazy. That’s crazy. Congratulations. Jess, good call on sending me over here. Let’s talk about, why is this rolled into a commercial printer?” Well, it’s rolled into a commercial printer for a couple reasons. One, is to get shorter and shorter and as personalization one-to-one, cost is more variation is several run, where you might have a run of 200 point of sale posters but you have 5 or 6 versions of that, it becomes more prohibited to do that on the commercial press. We introduced the Vortex where you can do that one-to-one variation variable printing, full-color print on the fly at a foot a second. You can do that variable, all in one pass.
“And, I’ve noticed a variety of media, paper, substrates, coming out of this Vortex, which I guess is a bonus, that you could use all those different kinds of substrates.” Yes. So, you can use your standard matte papers for process store signs, all the way up to photographic papers for high quality, but then also banners and materials like this on a lightweight material. We have some very good materials with the people from Mohawk Paper. It’s excellent. Lightweight films, a backlit film, a type-dot for instance, and adhesive for our final. We can print on polypropylene which is very popular in the pure distributorship-type business advertising, the big bureau brands, etc. So, the vortex is very flexible in terms of its media capabilities and what it can print to, and also very high-speed.
“And, how can people get in touch with you or how can they find one of these machines to check out?” You can get in touch with me, Kevin Howes at firstname.lastname@example.org. You could check out our website, www.rti-digital.com. We have some excellent case studies up there with European and some American customers and applications.
“And, I think you mentioned Mac Paper also distributes the machine?” Absolutely. So, Mac Paper is our distributor in the southeast. They’ve just sold their first unit. We we also make a label printer using the same technology. Single-pass, single-print at 8 and a half inches, wide printing again. It’s 6 inches or inches per second.
“Well, thank you so much for your time. Thanks Jess for sending me over here. I really appreciate it.”
