Hello everybody, I’m at the EFI booth with Bob Murray from McRae Imaging in Canada.” Hello.
How are you doing?” I’m great. Thank you very much.
And, I’m honored that you are able to speak with us today to the printerverse, as I call them, the audience at large. And, you have the distinction of being the first in the world to own a new press and so, I don’t butcher any of the information. I will pretty much let you take it from here and I will interject some questions along the way.” We actually bought a Reggiani Press of 3.4 meter three years ago and had it installed. And, it was the first in the world. We bought it from Reggiani, Currently now, EFI has acquired Reggiani, and we’re the first to buy. It’s our second press, but it’s the first one from EFI.
So, you have two of the same presses?” Yes.
And, what are you doing with them?” It’s dye-sublimation. So, our company is solely a dye-sublimation printer, printing on fabrics. And, there’s really two methodologies to print on fabric. One is direct and one is transfer. We’ve been using the transfer machine for years and years. The new machine will allow us to do direct printing on fabrics.
I was mentioning before, that if I had to identify a trend of the show, I believe it is direct-to-fabric printing. Would you agree with that?” I totally agree. The trends over the years towards fabric printing – I can even remember this show ten years ago, and you might find 5 % fabrics in the show. Today, it’s hard not to find fabric, and direct is becoming more and more up the trend, for sure.
So, did you buy the presses with customers already having this need or did you do the, ‘when we build it they will come’ philosophy thing?” We’re hoping it’s a Field of Dreams story, and that they will come. There were two reasons, really. It was not about the capacity. It was the ability to do two types of printing, one direct and one transfer, and have the insurance factor. Reggiani’s become so important in our company today, that if anything were to happen to it, it would seriously jeopardize our ability to print. So, now I’ve got back up. If anything ever happen to one machine, I’ve got the insurance of having a second machine.
Did you have to hire additional sales people with new knowledge or were you able to train your current sales people for the new presses?” Our current sales people are very familiar with our products, although we have, this year, hired two new sales people. So, we’re growing, and that’s because of growth.
That’s fantastic. Now, obviously, you don’t sell these presses but you are a printer, and we’re talking to mostly printers out there. What would be your, you know, you’re at a bar, you’re having a beer with somebody and they say, ‘Give me a really good reason why I want one of these presses.’ What would it be?” Growth of fabric in the print industry, the soft side industry, the retail growth of fabrics, the point of sale, the exhibits and trade shows today. It’s a green product. It’s lightweight. There’s so many benefits to fabrics today. That printer will be able to solve a lot of issues and get a lot of customers from people. I do believe today, the customers are looking for fabric solutions and that’s what it gives them.
Okay. Now, I’m going to ask a difficult question, but you don’t actually have to answer if you don’t want to. But, how long until the ROI starts coming in on one of these things?” When you look at it, theoretically, everybody does 3 years ROI. When I look at my first printer, it probably took longer, and part of it was because we’re new. We’re trying to build in. The beautiful part about the printer is it doesn’t have to be working anywhere near a 100% work capacity. If I can get 35 to 40 percent capacity being printed on one shift, it will make a profit. So, we’ve gotten the first one to that point and we’re praying we got the second one there, not too long.
That’s fantastic. And, I really appreciate you answering that question. How can people get in touch with you?” With me?
Yes. With your company.” Absolutely. Bob Murray, it’s Mcrae Imaging. Our website is www.mcrae-imaing.com.
And, you’re from Canada. A, we like the Canadians.” Yes. We are. Proudly Canadian.
Thank you so much. Actually, last question. Let’s talk a little bit about the show. Have you been to SGIA before?” We’ve been to SGIA for many years. I’ve been coming for over a dozen years. I’ve watched the evolution, the change in the show. This year, just as an attendee, it’s the most exciting show I’ve ever seen. The hall is crowded. The buzz is here. The buzz within the EFI booth is amazing. I think these guys are doing great and I’m glad to be here.
Thank you so much, and I appreciate your time.” You’re welcome.
