Reitoft and Yoshihiro Oe met for the first time at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2019 and have since got to know each other in meetings exchanging views on the cultural differences between Japan and Europe. Steffen Franzisi is the CEO of Kohlhammer Druck in Germany, and this is his first visit to Innovationdays. He is very impressed with the event, mainly how automated the post-press/binding is becoming.

During the pandemic, more than 1,300 people from around the world tuned into The Crown Pub every Tuesday and Thursday for weeks and months. Not only did the virtual event create long-lasting friendships, but it also became a learning place. Kelvin Bell from V-Press was one of the initiators of the event, and it was great catching up with him here at the Innovationdays - for the first time in person! Two other frequent "flyers" is Mark Stephenson from Fujifilm and Brendan Perring from IPIA.

Hunkeler Innovationdays is about digital print and finishing, and though the emphasis is on inkjet, you also find toner machines. Canon brought their V1000, which according to Marc Bärtchi, has a lot to offer - double-sided banner print and print on structured papers, to mention a few of the features. Enjoy!

BW Papersystems didn't exactly exhibit at Hunkeler Innovationdays, but yet Felix Krüger from BW Papersystems decided to come and check out the opportunities for their newest Questec cut/stacker. We met with Felix Krüger at the Drewsen Spezialitypapierer in Hall 1 at Innovationdays, as Drewsen is the first customer for the machine capable of cutting and stacking at a staggering 400 meters per minute down to 40 GSM - simply amazing!

Drewsen Spezialpapiere is an almost 500 years old paper manufacturer based outside Hannover in Germany. At Hunkeler Innovationdays, Eyvaz Tayan takes the temperature of the digital market as the company develops paper to fit a customer's need. RISO might be a new name to some, as it was for me. They are an established name, mainly when people are looking for productive printing in the transactional space of our industry. Their HQ is based in Lyon, France, and Franz Castel brings us up to speed on why one should not forget to look into their Inkjet offerings. Komfi is a well-known and 100% family-owned business in the Lamination & UV coating space. In this film, Jacques Michiels has a good talk with Jana Slováková, daughter of the founder and taking care of global sales and marketing. Based in the Cech republic and serving customers' demand globally, they are showing some novelties like the laminator with dual processing units, the normal lamination, and the one for structuring the surface by embossing using a special roller applying surface effects on demand. Jana Slováková shares how Komfi was and can deal with the worldwide shortages of materials and how they delivered on promises in the last couple of years. Financial stability and stock production have been key.

Innovationdays have become a significant event for almost all companies and visitors the event is an overwhelming show of equipment, meetings, people, old friends, and so many inputs, that at least your INKISH team has no problems falling a sleep after busy days - and often followed up by dinner parties, meetings, etc. in the evenings. When we met Simon Cooper from Solopress for the first time three years ago, his company Solopress had just invested in their first HP T-250. Now three years later, Cooper visits Innovationdays for the first time and is excited as it seems that Solopress will be the first investor in a new Müller Martini binding solution again. Great to meet people face to face.

Featuring the Screen Truepress Jet520HD+, serving the commercial print markets. Truepress uses the new ink SC+ in the shown configuration to enable high-quality commercial printing on offset-coated papers. Also present is the “new to be” packaging-focused Truepress PAC 520P high-speed, water-based inkjet system for paper packaging substrates. It is located a bit more hidden in the back of the booth but was elegantly brought to our attention by Hiromi Kitagawa for us to see. It’s not out yet and still under development, but we got a chance to see it up close & personal, and now so do you. The Truepress PAC 520P is coming to fruition, and it uses Screen’s new Truepress ink NP, specialized pigment inks that comply with appropriate food-safety guidelines and regulations for paper packaging. The PAC 520P will be introduced to the market later this year.

Constantin Schmedt is the fifth generation of Schmedt. Though neither he nor his brother wanted to take over the company, little brother Constantin took over the management. In this interview with Stefan Hunkeler, we discuss the Hunkeler Innovationdays 2023. It takes place in beautiful Lucern in Switzerland, February 27th - March 2nd, 2023 - and we can't wait! Hunkeler Innovationdays has grown to become one of the most important events in the industry but had to postpone, like everybody else, because of the pandemic. Now it's the point of no return, and exhibitors and many customers are planning to attend the maybe only end-to-end event for digital print/finishing. INKISH will be covering Innovationdays intensively and will also talk to many of the vendors exhibiting before the event to encourage you to attend. The COVID pandemic is for sure still not over, and the number of cancellations and postponements of events is still something we have to live with. Hunkeler Innovationdays, one of the most beloved events, has already been postponed a couple of times. Though many had hoped for the event to occur in February 2022, Hunkeler President Stefan Hunkeler gave the sad message about moving the event to 2023 a few weeks ago. Our last day in Lucerne - and still capturing happy faces wherever we go. Great deals announced and as CEO Michel Hunkeler tells us "Everybody anticipated a faster growth with Inkjet and were wrong, but now the technology has matured, the quality of print, binding, and embellishment is ready, and the market is ready to invest." Always interesting to follow statements like this and we will, of course, check up on this in the future as well. At the Think Smart Factory event in Kyoto, we got the chance to talk to VP Marketing & Partnering, Hans Gut from Hunkeler. Hunkeler and Horizon have been working together for years, and of course, it makes sense for both companies to exhibit at each other's events like Think Smart Factory and Hunkeler Innovationdays. Where Hunkeler has focused on reel-based finishing equipment, Horizon has focused on sheets - and of course, their equipment interfaces with both printers, and other finishing equipment. In this interview, Hans Gut speaks about the automation opportunities, and that the need for even more automation is a huge demand from printers. Enjoy this interview!

Hunkeler is a family owned- and operated company in Switzerland who has specialized in finishing equipment for mainly roll-based equipment. Considered the 'Rolls Royce' of finishing Hunkeler is in the hot-spot for the expected transition from conventional offset printing to digital inkjet. At Hunkeler Innovationdays in 2019 Hunkeler for the first time introduced sheet-based finishing equipment for the Océ/Canon I300 inkjet machine. Pat McGrew is impressed with the print samples delivered by Ricoh. They make it easy, but more importantly, they show cool samples from what their technology can deliver—folders, postcards, and of course, a piece that reminds us of Hunkeler Innovationdays Lucerne. Great to see how vendors invest in hopefully valuable samples that support your business - but hey, you should really consider doing your own print samples and use these to market your services to your customers!

What a start. Think Smart Factory is a new event, and without comparison, one of the best-executed events we have ever attended. Think Smart Factory is an event where all focus is on showing end-to-end solutions. There are ten different stations where you can see the flows from the paper intake to the output of a finished product. Clearly inspired by Hunkeler Innovationdays where it's also about equipment, but with an even more expressed dedication to show the entire workflow. This is a rare opportunity to see the entire process from when a job-ticket is created to the finished product delivered. As production moves from conventional offset to digital print the need for binding equipment that matches the qualities known is in demand. Italian vendor Meccanotecnica deliver solutions for both digital and offset. At Hunkeler Innovationdays 2019 in Luzerne, we got the chance to talk to Marketing Manager Stefano Formentini from Meccanotecnica. The solution they showed at the event consisted of an unwinder and a cutter from Hunkeler combined with Meccanotecnica's Universe Web solution that sections the cut sheets into a signature and delivers these for further processing. At the recent Hunkeler Innovationdays 2019, we bumped into Sabine Geldermann who is the Director of DRUPA, and we got the chance to sit down and talk to her about DRUPA 2020. DRUPA is by most people in the printing industry considered the most important and also the biggest – and as Sabine Geldermann tells in this film, vendors even plan developing cycles around the DRUPA 4 years cycles – so no wonder. However, looking at the numbers DRUPA also becomes smaller and smaller – and, of course, some of the decreases come from the fact that the industry is shrinking, but some may also come from the fact that trade shows, in general, have difficulties attracting the visitors to come. The numbers from the previous DRUPA in 2016 also show something that must be a challenge. 68% of the visitors came from Europe and only 9% from, i.e. North America. To be a true global print show requires not only vendors from all over the world but also visitors from all over the world. Sabine Geldermann tells that some local German tradeshows have closed and been absorbed by DRUPA but also that the number of visitors from outside Europe is growing. In this very openminded interview with Sabine Geldermann, you get a great insight into the upcoming DRUPA 2020, and though it still seems to be far away Sabine Geldermann tells INKISH.TV that the sales for 2020 have already reached the 2016 level and all key accounts are assured. Good for DRUPA, good for the industry – and regardless of where you are located it’s time to organize hotels, Airbnb’s and travels to be sure to get accommodation – and just in case you haven’t been in Düsseldorf before: Be prepared to spend an awful lot of money to get even the worst shitty hotel
