That photo is taken from one of the last trips before the Corona started. We didn't really know what was going to hit us. When I look at that photo, it shows the international mindset. It shows the lack of worries that we had at the time. It's a mindset taking in what is interesting and good around us in the world. And people meet up internationally. We do come with our own culture. But we are still open to learn from others. The dog is clearly looking at a bright horizon. To have a dog is something that my wife and kids always wanted. And it has made us appreciate more of the things that we have in the area of our house. I've never taken so many walks. Even at six o'clock in the morning, because you can see the sun is rising. When you walk along the beach, walk in your own thoughts and think. And maybe we do too little of that. We are so busy answering the next e-mail that we stop thinking about what is actually not just the values, but also one of the opportunities. I do that as an offset for, for instance, our business development. We were hit really hard by this Covid-19 and we had to stop our usual business traveling around making films. And all of a sudden we had to rethink: what are we doing? Communication companies have to rethink their communication. How do we capture the value for our customers and for our business? In the beginning, we all thought that this was just going to go away in a matter of months. Now we're in the new reality. And I think that we've all learned a lot from that. And I think that our business models have developed as well. Some of the virtual meetings is here to stay. And I see INKISH as a new way of communicating. I think that it's very common for a lot of trade medias to communicate with the industry in a way where they preserve the already known ways of doing it.

Dharminder Biharie · Fast Forward · Burn...

Business is also having luck. Being on the right time, on the right place. If you are a Sales Manager of Tesla or iPhone...are you brilliant? No! The product is brilliant because it's on the right time, the right place and at the right moment. I worked 12 years for Xerox. And I learned a lot about all the processes. So I'm a very successful company in the toner printing industry. From a leader to a follower. And what I really regret is that they still have Palo Alto Research Center. They have 11000 patents. Still they can't invent new business models. I believe it has to do with management style and egos of CEOs. And that's my Dutch directness about this topic. Price looks very important, but at the end, you're selling trust, not price. Because how many deals happened in the past where you think: Oh, I'm 20 percent cheaper than the competitor. And still the competitor buys the product that's 20 percent more expensive. But the end price is all about trust. Because what the customer wants has to do with the liability and the operation of my business. Tiny Habits has to do with how can you change your behavior? Your brain is conditioned. And that means your brain is unbelievably lazy. When you make a decision and always search for the fastest path. And your brain creates a neurotransmitter synapse. You think you are doing this rationally. That is not the case. To break this rule, you need to change habits. And changing habit means you don't have to go directly into the big steps. But do tiny steps. I donate two and a half percent of my annual revenue to the Brain Foundation. I'm in the consultancy business. But also about knowledge business. And I need this part to be successful. The reality is one out of four people will get a brain disease sooner or later. And it can be a very simple one. But also Alzheimer, Parkinson, depression. The things we can build, create but also destroy is all done with a brain. And that's why I really love the Brain Foundation.

Colin Flinn · Fast Forward · Innovation ...

This is our first cherry blossom season here at our new facility. We just moved north of Kyoto onto the shores of Lake Biwa. We opened up the new Horizon Innovation Park. And that's where myself and the Horizon International team are now located. Right now, we can do demonstrations on every Horizon system. Some people would say that the printing industry is declining. We would say that it's changing. It's undergoing an evolution. Or it's more short run, more variable, more digital. The Japanese spirit is all about going from the smallest bit to the largest finished product, all in-house. Everything from the rollers to the circuit boards are produced right here. It was in 2019 when we held the first "Think Smart Factory" in Kyoto, Japan. What we want to show, automated solutions integrated from prepress to your press to your finishing in order to optimize your workflow. And what our workers can do during assembly is they can call those little robots to go to the warehouse, bring the necessary parts that they need. Our customers want to really feel the paper for themselves. They want to see the finished product. Here, the machines operating. As manufacturers, we want to present solutions and hear from our customers. Right now that's not always an option. Since the beginning, we've been adopting the newest technologies to be able to replicate that experience. They never expected that they would get this high quality. It's also opening up new doors. Because we get to take them on tours of our facility. Which you would never get to do when you're just at a trade show. Right now, we have a new training zone. Where we can have people from all over the world come and get hands on training with the machines. But when that's not an option, we have a training team here to help them out when they're in a pinch.

Pat McGrew · Fast Forward · drupa dog · ...

Bailey is the official dog of the McGrew Group. She is my co-host, Drupa dog. I have a wall full of them. And they're not all Disney. They're a little bit of everything. I grew up in the 60s with Saturday morning cartoons. I grew up with all the Disney pieces. My business partner at the time bought me the first cel. Which was of George Jetson and Astro. And then it got to be a thing. I always loved the roadrunner. I lived in New Mexico for five years. We moved into a house almost eight years ago that had a giant family room. And it also had sort of a more living room area. It has books, animation cels, the TV. But I also have a fireplace. But my space isn't really as big. I never wanted to be an independent consultant. I like the camaraderie of working for an organization. I can write technology. I understand where the vendors are. And whether they are hardware or software. And I understand the printing side of it. I've actually been able to craft a good assessment business. A good consulting business. A good writing business. It is harder and harder to be a one brand person. As an independent, I can work with everybody. I am sixty four. I've been walking around singing the Beatles song a lot. I think I've got a good 10 years at this. I think there is opportunity. We have three restaurants. We are remaining hopeful that by summer we'll be able to get them all open and full again. Everybody's had the last year to kind of sit in the lab and figure out what they needed to do. They've been busy. I mean, everyone that I work with has been busy. More interesting inkjet innovations. More interesting toner innovations. More interesting substrate innovations. And you put those all together. I'm excited.

Peter Luit · Fast Forward · printmediani...

I am the editor for printmedianieuws. The future remains online. Our public is growing and also our partners are still with us after this period. So I'm looking forward for the results in this year. I like a little bit to look at video. You inspired me on that. We also develop websites. Because we want to share our publishing knowledge to a wider audience. About 25 percent of our time we spend in developing websites for various markets. I have to cope with a lot of clients who set their steps in the online world and they need the experience of a publisher. After the pandemic we still use online communications a lot. And this tower represents all the online communications for me. Because it is a telecom company. So when I talk to you, I always think: OK, my first meters are over there. My son, who has Down syndrome, couldn't be at his work the whole week because of the influence of older people together. My son Joost was half time with me at the office. And he was making puzzles. Using his iPad. And he was using color books. I don't want to get rid of the stuff yet from my office. Because I'm still afraid that he might have to come back because of some pandemic reason. We analyze that there are losers and there are winners. The perspective I have on the site of the winners is that there are so many challenges in this printing industry. And we write about that of course. You have to see there is luck everywhere. But you have to grab it. And you have not to be afraid to try to do things.

Robert Godwin · Fast Forward · In the Mo...

In the morning when I first start, I work with two monitors. And I don't want to stare at the monitor all day. So I've set it up with a window background, which no one recommends. But it gives me a chance to take a look at the view. You know the activity as the morning rises - because I start very early. Look at all the emails, different newsletters, especially INKISH. No kidding. And that's what I do. That is how I start my day. The pandemic has allowed me to take deeper contact with a lot of people. Because they have more time to spend in communication on the computer than they would have ever had before. Absent a formal webinar circumstance where people are generally stiffer. There's a lot more interaction of conversational type of communication that takes place. You learn more about the person when you do that. So that's one benefit of the pandemic. I hope the communication doesn't go away. Books are extremely important. This is merely a small amount of the books that I have. It's well over two thousand. And that's been shaved down when I moved down to Chile. A lot of them are reference books that I have. That I use on a constant basis. I'll think of something and I want to verify it. But I like the books. And if you can read any of the titles that are in the background. There's a lot of art books. I think that books have an interactivity that is important. So I think printing industry and its relationship to books is really important. I have a wall that I look at. Prominent on the wall is a portrait of Pablo Picasso and Henry Moores. These are important to me as inspiration. As people who, with their own path, spoke their own minds and did creative things. I think of myself in business as being a creative person. In the upper left hand corner there's a sketch of my mother when she was young. And a sketch of my father when he was old. He loved sailing and he is there working on the chart. And he would always dress up whatever character he was playing. As a photographer, as a sailor, as a businessman. And I don't have his fashion skills. But I appreciate the photos that he's created. And I love that portrait of him.

Deborah Corn · Fast Forward · Voting · V...

There is nothing more important than using your voice. The vote last year in America was one of the most significant milestones in our history. What matters is that you use your voice. A few weeks ago, I got my first Covid vaccine. It was an emotional experience for me. Life getting back to the next normal. The fact that I could get on a plane again really changes everything. There is nothing like seeing people, meeting people, discovering things when you travel the world. It really is a dichotomy, a velvet devil. And in a lot of ways, that's how I felt about last year. There was some really intimate things about it. Connections with other people. And then there was just the hell of it. One of the most difficult things I found about last year was I don't really have any business coming in. I'm not going anywhere. And what am I going to do? Just give me a second, because you made me think about something else. Many people lost people last year, and I am one of them. We lost my grandma to Covid and it has been really hard. It's been very difficult in a weird way. Tie that to all of the things that died last year. A metaphorical sense. No trade shows last year. A lot of relationships ended because you didn't see people and people ended relationships with companies. The Project Peacock Platform. The entire ecosystem of what everybody needs is in one place. I think it's really important they can get print samples. They can find printers who have that equipment. This is cool. I want to do it. Great. This is who you can do it with.

Print is Still a Profitable & Growi...

A lot of people talk about digital transformation, but in the small town Donauwörth, just a couple of hours drive outside Munich the printing company Schätzl Print Emotion is not talking but doing. The CEO Ulrich Schätzl have a clear vision of how digital print production in the copies down-to-one is the future for the printing company. With vast investments in HP Indigo machines, Scodix digital enhancement, and most recent extremely efficient binding equipment from Müller Martini - and a few more large investments around the corner (inkjet), the company is geared towards a 100% digital future. Schätzl Print Emotion sell books to customers (publishers, white-labels, etc.) all over Europe, and even in the US customers have discovered Schätzl Print Emotion. INKISH went to Schätzl the first time a little more than a year ago in 2019 with Scodix, and what we saw was a company highly dedicated to being on the winning side - and coming back in 2020 was sure even more interesting since the company has grown even more. Print isn't dead. Print is changing, and with a digital mindset, the company should be an inspiration for everybody.
