Theo Buchmeyer · manroland Goss · PreDrupa LIVE · May 14th 2024 · Replay

Morten Reitoft and Theo Buchmeyer discuss Manroland Goss’s participation in the upcoming Drupa 2024. Buchmeyer emphasizes the importance of attending Drupa for the company despite the absence of their “brother” company. He sees it as a key opportunity to showcase new products, meet customers, and build new relationships.

Reitoft praises Manroland Goss for adapting to market changes through refurbishment and technological innovations, ensuring the continued relevance of their web offset presses. Buchmeyer confirms the significant install base of over 3,000 active presses worldwide and their plans to support these with retrofits and improvements.

They discuss Drupa’s role as a statement of commitment to the future of the print industry and the importance of maintaining connections with customers. Buchmeyer highlights the company’s efforts to integrate digital tools like VPN and IoT boxes for monitoring press performance and predicting downtime, enhancing productivity through tools like Manroland Sense, an artificial intelligence tool for predictive maintenance.

Buchmeyer acknowledges the growth of digital printing but emphasizes that offset printing remains a robust, productive process for mid to large runs. He predicts a coexistence of both technologies, offset retaining its place in the industry for the foreseeable future.

Manroland Goss’s booth at Drupa will focus on its new VarioMAN packaging press, showcasing its flexibility and cost-efficiency in reducing production costs and carbon footprint. It will also demonstrate maintenance tools and emphasize the importance of sustainability and extending the economic life of its installed presses.

Reitoft and Buchmeyer discuss the continued relevance and growth of web offset printing in certain markets, noting that some customers are expanding their volumes through consolidation and new titles. Buchmeyer concludes by emphasizing the importance of supporting the existing install base and showcasing Manroland Goss’s upgrades and innovations at Drupa.

Franz Kriechbaum · CEO · manroland Goss · LabelExpo Barcelona 2025

Morten Reitoft from Inkish speaks with Franz Kriechbaum of manroland Goss during LabelExpo in Barcelona. Franz explains that although many assume manroland Goss has struggled as web offset demand has declined, the company has adapted successfully by focusing on book production and high-speed finishing solutions. He notes that while global book market growth appears small, certain customers, especially in North America, are reporting double-digit growth in book printing, often still using decades-old web offset presses, which creates major upgrade opportunities. He highlights the company’s FormerLine and FoldLine systems, developed around 2015–2016, originally designed for long runs but now proving ideal for the new generation of high-speed inkjet printers. These digital presses are finally reaching the speeds the FormerLine was built for, up to 50,000 revolutions per hour in continuous operation, and manroland Goss has already sold about 20 units with demand rising strongly, especially from China. Franz adds that handling delicate papers at very high speeds is a core advantage, rooted in his team’s aerospace engineering expertise. At 60 km/h paper behaves like an airfoil, so manroland Goss uses air-film guidance and other advanced methods to ensure accuracy and stability, which gives them a competitive edge in high-speed web finishing versus traditional sheet-based or lower-speed competitors. He also discusses the global market outlook. Tariffs in United States add complexity, but manroland Goss can legally mitigate costs through software, local commissioning work, and close partnerships, keeping ROI attractive for US customers. Asia is becoming more active as well. Historically content with “good enough” technology, the region now seeks higher performance driven by inkjet growth, where manroland Goss already has proven solutions. While many still associate the company only with newspaper presses, Franz emphasizes their diversification. Alongside web offset, they now serve digital book production and are expanding into packaging. After years of underinvestment by the market, book printing is resurging, and manroland Goss’s experience with high-speed web paper handling positions them well to meet this new demand.

Karin Enderle · International Sales Manager Packaging · manroland Goss · LabelExpo Barcelona 2025

Morten from Inkish speaks with Karin at manroland Goss during LabelExpo in Barcelona. With 40 years in print and packaging and only weeks into her new role, Karin traces the shift from long-run, sheetfed commercial work toward web, automation, and especially flexible packaging, now accelerated by brand demands and differing regional regulations. She walks through the configurable VARIOMAN concept on display: a non-stop unwind with flying splice, infeed and web cleaning, then as many offset units as a job requires, plus hybrid options such as an inline flexo station and gravure units for varnish, high-laydown whites, and barrier layers. A turn bar enables two-sided work. Curing is centered on electron-beam for food-safe, low-migration results, complemented by hot-air dryers and, where appropriate, UV or LED-UV. The sleeve-based press covers a wide repeat range up to about 43 inches, runs very thin and stretchable films for sleeves and flexible packaging, and can also handle folding carton; output can be roll-to-roll or roll-to-sheet. Beyond packaging, the platform is being used for pharmaceutical leaflets on ultra-light papers down to roughly 27 gsm. Karin emphasizes that specifying one of these lines is a consultative process—scoping current and future needs, iterating configurations, and producing test prints—because the same modular press can be tailored to very different applications.

The Future Looks Bright · Franz Kriechbaum · CEO · manroland Goss

Franz Kriechbaum is the CEO of manroland GOSS, and as we speak to him in this interview, the future looks bright. Good order books, a clear strategy, and a profitable future on new and refurbishing machines in the market, including competing brands. Also, a move into packaging is among the ingredients that manroland GOSS has in the pipeline for its future. Franz Kriechbaum also talks about how manroland GOSS had used similar services on their machines before the term was invented. Therefore, the company has excellent data on its customers securing in-time services and upgrades. Nice to hear, and though production is lower than in the past, the assembly hall was busy while we were visiting the company. Enjoy!
