"It's very difficult", is Marco Rota's instant answer to Editor Morten Reitoft's question about whether it's difficult to program the software that makes the machines work. And as much as we talk about hardware, the computer/programming part grows, not only because of complex machines, but also because the market requires machines easy to operate. As he describes it, the more an operator shouldn't do, the more the programming needs to be in place. Fun and great insights!
Latest update on the software Bronte - or as we like to call it, book factory in a box. Contract Manager Francesco Crotti walks us through the software and how it fits a growing market for books on demand. Always good to get the latest updates, especially on software that more people should consider, if they are in the production of book space :-)
Some of the products produced at the Meccanotecnica plant are tested in a lab before installation, and others are tested every 5 or in batches, using advanced quality control software/hardware. Fabio Tagliaferri ensures the quality together with his team.
Fabio Valoti is responsible for the production plant where many of Meccanotecnica's parts are manufactured. For Meccanotecnica, it's important to control the production of the most critical parts and time-sensitive parts, such as spare parts, as even small deviations from requirements can affect a machine's performance. Valoti has been with Meccanotecnica for more than 20 years, and explains that even the most complex machines become "easy" to make if just the CAD/CAM is done right.
In this, The Walk, we take a closer look at the brand-new LYRA from Meccanotecnica - a case-in-point machine, made for print-on-demand and book-of-one production. According to Meccanotecnica, the machine is extremely competitive in the market up to 1,000 books and wins over the competition by offering no setup, being fully automated, and therefore being usable by operators with no or limited skills. The machine is defining a new mid-category, which is super interesting for yearbook producers, photobook producers, and the book manufacturers specialized in book-of-one production. The LYRA is part of the new Meccanotecnica that, since drupa 2024, has developed new machines for the first time in its 60+ years of history outside the smyth-sewn segment. At drupa, the company announced its first perfect binding line, the Sirio! Enjoy The Walk :-)
Workflow is becoming increasingly important in our industry and is an integral part of both pre-sales and after-sales. Joanna Wojciak Baiguini has great experience in both fields, as she has worked for Meccanotecnica in Bergamo for ten years - now it's time to move to the US to be part of the growth the company expects.
Elena Calaterra has a fantastic job, as a very important part of it involves visiting printing companies, primarily in Germany, Poland, and Scandinavia, so she can learn from printers about their binding machine needs. In this interview, she talks about her job, and how she also, as a young female, is received by printers - and how that it often turns into a very respectful relationship as they understand that she knows what she is talking about. Great to have young talents in our industry :-)
Primož Štrumbelj is CEO of Prima IP, Slovenia - one of the few high-speed digital printers in the small Balkan country. In the chat, we, of course, talk about technology, and also what he sees as being the most interesting product at the Meccanotecnica Open House - and without hesitation, he points at the new Case In machine Lyra. Interesting view, and since Ziga Kovac (our head of production) is from Slovenia, it was fun to meet someone from "our" own neighborhood.
Part of an open house, like the Book Your Future event in Bergamo, is also partners. One of them is Hunkeler, here delivering an unwinder and cut-stacker to online feed the Universe Web digital smyth-sewing machine. Reto Zaugg talks about the positive collaboration between the companies, and we also discuss how the digital market is growing. Enjoy!
Years of experience with Meccanotecnica, and soon experience in the US, where Luca Negro has taken on the role of promoting and selling the Italian OEM. As Luca Negro explains in the interview, Meccanotecnica is well known by many companies, and in particular for the solution they offer within print and offset, but Luca Negros job is to make Meccanotecnica more known among printers in the US, an interesting job, where travel is part of the package, taking Luca Negros to the various parts of the industry, where his personal approach, friendliness and at the same time professionalism will build the position of Meccanotecnica takes one step, at the time!
Yet another young man who knows not only the technology but also its importance. Great talking to Vladimir Cometti, who is the Pre-Sales Manager, which means that before a sale is concluded, a solution is stress tested to be sure it can be connected, that it delivers what is expected - of course, you would say, but here put in the system :-)
Elisabetta Engel is these days Meccanotecnica's Swiss Army Knife, as she manages for a great part the Open House, Marketing in general, but also sales in two major important markets like Korea and China - well done, and she is a great example of how Meccanotecnica over the years has been able to attract young, very well educated people to the company, and to part of the transformation process that clearly takes place. Enjoy the interview :-)
It's a new and revitalized Meccanotecnica we meet at the Open House in Bergamo, Italy, at the end of May 2026. New and revitalized because the company, along with a presentation of new machines and technology, now, more than ever, is ready to concur market with a full line of bookbinding products - from revised versions of equipment for mass production to super optimized binding equipment for the production of one. Interesting chat, and also this interview with Stefano Formentini shares where the 62-year-old company is moving, and how the latest and newest technology create an interested among the many guests. Enjoy!
