Andrew Gunn · Global Production Marketing · Fujifilm Print US

At the Fujifilm booth, Morten B. Reitoft catches up with longtime friend Andrew Gunn for a conversation that quickly moves far beyond the equipment on display.

Fujifilm has been busy since their last meeting in Chicago. The new Revoria Press EC2100S/SC285S generation is gaining traction; customers are responding to the new capabilities and colors, and Andrew points to automation, AI, and increasingly intelligent production as technologies that will have an even greater impact than the specifications that are attracting attention on the show floor.

But this conversation is also about Fujifilm itself.

Fujifilm has announced plans for a partial spin-off of its graphic communications business, creating obvious interest and speculation throughout the industry. Andrew explains why he sees the move as an opportunity to give the graphic communications organization greater agility, more strategic options and increased control over its own future.

Morten challenges Andrew on the uncertainty that inevitably follows major corporate changes and asks whether Fujifilm could be part of a broader trend in which large diversified technology groups separate their graphic arts activities into more focused businesses.

The discussion also touches on Fujifilm’s evolution following the changes to the former Fuji Xerox structure, investments in packaging with technologies such as the Jet Press FP790, the growing role of software and AI, changes in other parts of the portfolio, and the company’s strategy of what Andrew describes as essentially “divesting to invest.”

While much of the industry naturally focuses on where Fujifilm is reducing its activities, Andrew argues that equally important investments are happening below the surface — particularly around automation, workflow, AI and packaging.

And perhaps that is the most interesting part of the conversation: what will Fujifilm Graphic Communications look like when today’s restructuring is completed?

Andrew clearly believes it will be a very different animal.
