Why Smart Factory in Production Print? ·...

The next industrial revolution has already arrived. With a continuing surge in new technology and data analytics, the first generation of Industry 4.0 is rapidly making automation essential on the Production Print floor. Meanwhile, we continue to evolve towards the fifth industrial revolution focused on mass customization and personalization for customers. Though the need for an automated workflow is becoming universal, there’s no one-size-fits all solution. Jobs flow differently in commercial print shops than they do in high-volume transactional data centers, direct mail houses, or book manufacturing. During this session, you will hear from industry experts from Canon the advantages of automating the entire production print process from start to finish. Speaker for this session are: Allen Filson · Jane Nerf · Dennis Soucy · Nick Thorne

Think Smart Factory · Day 3

This is our video documentation of the third- and last day at Think Smart Factory. Clearly fewer people at the show-floor, but still good. That is good for us since it gives us more space at the stations with demonstrations. Today we got the chance to do a longer interview with General Manager Yoji "Joe" Otsuka from SCREEN, and we have a short snippet of our conversation with him in this daily show report. We hope you enjoyed the films we have published so far, and you can for sure look forward to some great interviews, great presentations of technology, and well a factory tour from Horizon. We can't wait to show you!

Think Smart Factory · Day 2

The second day at the Think Smart Factory event in Kyoto was as good as the first one - maybe even better. Many people at the show-floor, exciting presentations, and a chance to dig into even more of the workflows. In our first film, we promised to show you all ten stations here, but there are simply too many people around the stations to do this in a 'live' style. So we have recorded all ten stations, will make them into separate films that you can enjoy one by one afterwards.

Think Smart Factory · Day 1

What a start. Think Smart Factory is a new event, and without comparison, one of the best-executed events we have ever attended. Think Smart Factory is an event where all focus is on showing end-to-end solutions. There are ten different stations where you can see the flows from the paper intake to the output of a finished product. Clearly inspired by Hunkeler Innovationdays where it's also about equipment, but with an even more expressed dedication to show the entire workflow. This is a rare opportunity to see the entire process from when a job-ticket is created to the finished product delivered. But check out of show-report and look forward to seeing all ten workflows presented here on INKISH. Expect also interesting interviews with industry leaders from the show floor. Finally, you will get a new show report every day, and also articles on NEWS. Enjoy!

Think Smart Factory · Kyoto November 11t...

Think Smart Factory is an upcoming event in Kyoto, Japan. As you can hear in this presentation, of the event, by Yoshihiro Oe, General Manager from Horizon International, the event is not so much like an exhibition. Rather than having booths where each exhibitor presents its products and services, Smart Factory is an opportunity to see equipment working together and see end-to-end productions. The "end-to-end" also includes the workflow part that is typically before print, of course. The event is developed by a group of companies including: Canon Marketing Japan. Inc. / DAC ENGINEERING Co., Ltd. / FUJIFILM Global Graphic Systems Co., Ltd. / goof, inc. / HP Japan Inc. / Hunkeler AG / JSPIRITS Inc. / KONICA MINOLTA JAPAN, INC. / RESOLOGIC. Inc. / Ricoh Japan Co., Ltd. / RYOBI MHI Graphic Technology Ltd. / SCREEN Graphic Solutions Co., Ltd. / TECNAU INKISH will be covering the event, and we can't wait to get to Kyoto. As Yoshihiro Oe also states in this interview, Kyoto is wonderful this time a year. Hope to see you there!

Leverage the Power of Workflow Software ...

This event is all about the ideas surrounding a Smart Factory and Industry 4.0; thoughts for how print and digital factories will inject innovation, intelligence and hyper-productivity. But hold on there partner, in order to get to 4.0, you need to make sure you are leveraging technologies that will help you get there. In this session, with our guests, we will talk about how you should “walk your workflow” and take note of where you have manual processes, slowdowns and bottlenecks, where there are opportunities to consolidate technologies or update with more capable, feature-rich solutions. Then we will offer you ideas for how to take this information and chart a smart path to your Smart Factory Industry 4.0. And this session will benefit any organizations dealing with print...digital or both types of product delivery channels. More specifically, we will also share some views on how PDF is becoming the defacto print and electronic standard for a multitude of industries and communication types.

Hunkeler Acquired by Müller Martini · An...

The media got the embargoed press release about 20 minutes before the information could be published at 16:00, December 6th, 2023 - which is BREAKING news. Of course, acquisitions between companies like Hunkeler and Müller Martini will always create headlines and have consequences. However, this is not just an acquisition, but in our view, a game-changer for several reasons. First of all, we believe it will change the dynamics in the finishing industry - and yes, initially only in the digital space. However, as the digital space continues to grow, the impact of a merged Müller Martini with Hunkeler can have huge opportunities. We are, in particular, curious about what this does to the long-time relationship between Horizon and Hunkeler - mainly because the two companies have worked closely together for years, and now the acquirer is maybe Horizon's biggest competitor - but it may also have other consequences as the biggest market for Hunkeler and probably Müller Martini, North America, have Standard Finishing as distributor for both Hunkeler and Horizon - can that continue? Or what will happen? All of these are speculations, and time will tell - but they are interesting - and an acquisition with further impact than most other M&As lately. Warm congratulations to Hunkeler and Müller Martini. Find the official press release below: Müller Martini and Hunkeler join forces for the future After careful consideration, the owner families have decided to merge the Hunkeler Group with the Müller Martini Group. Müller Martini Holding AG has acquired all of the shares of the Hunkeler Group. With this transaction, the Hunkeler family and Crédit Mutuel Equity have sold off all their shares to Müller Martini. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. Hunkeler AG and Müller Martini AG are both global market leaders with innovative solutions for post-print paper processing. Both companies focus a significant part of their innovative strength on the economical production of individualized print products within an automated smart factory. Hunkeler and Müller Martini have been very close for many years. The long and successful history began during the 2nd World War, when Hans Müller worked for Hunkeler as a mechanical engineer before setting up his own business in 1946 and founding the company Hans Müller / Grapha. These good relations have been maintained for decades. The local proximity in the Zofingen region and the already existing and successful partnership in the machine and component business form an ideal starting point for even closer cooperation in the future. By joining forces, both companies see great opportunities to bundle their innovation activities and to serve their global customer base even better in the future through joint sales and service activities. The two owner families have therefore decided on this strategic transaction that led to the acquisition of Hunkeler AG by Müller Martini AG. Bruno Müller: "The graphic arts industry is constantly changing and regularly calls for new innovations. By combining the key components of the two companies, such as personnel, expertise and technology, we will be able to serve our global clientele even better with innovative solutions in the future." Stefan and Michel Hunkeler: "There is a long-standing partnership between Hunkeler and Müller Martini and a regular exchange. The opportunity for the merger is currently greatly beneficial for both partners and our joint customers, as it will result in considerable advantages in a combined enterprise. This is also a strong commitment for the Zofingen region."

Next Generation · Bryan Takano · Horizon...

Everybody is shouting for labor, but what is the long-term solution to the labor shortage? In hall two at IGAS, one booth looked considerably different from all the other booths. There was an education stage sponsored by several OEMs and branded Think Smart Factory. On stage during the day's many presentations, but outside the stage area, there was a technology show-off with a Horizon BQ-binder and an HT-three-side knife wrapped in a cool anima-style design. The solution was entirely managed by two robot arms and one AGV. Bryan Takano from Horizon explains that it's a technology show-off to show young people about opportunities in the printing industry. By combining art and technology, more will likely be interested. Behind the technology show-off, a huge fantastic painting was shown. In front, some really cool, very large print samples using different technologies were among the draws for the passing audience. But see for yourself, Jan Majnik (INKISH Filmer) captured some really nice views of both!

We first met Colin Flinn back at the Think Smart Factory event in Kyoto, where he surprised us by being fluent in both Japanese and English. We have also met Flinn at several online events LIVE from Japan, where he and his team has built up a comprehensive online/offline demo facility - but now it's at PRINTING United where Colin Flinn demonstrates Horizon's new Gauze, End Paper, and bar code printing capabilities, enabling customers to use the BQ-series binders for softcover AND book blocks for hardcover books - quite amazing, but see for yourself :-)

Colin Flinn · Fast Forward · Innovation ...

This is our first cherry blossom season here at our new facility. We just moved north of Kyoto onto the shores of Lake Biwa. We opened up the new Horizon Innovation Park. And that's where myself and the Horizon International team are now located. Right now, we can do demonstrations on every Horizon system. Some people would say that the printing industry is declining. We would say that it's changing. It's undergoing an evolution. Or it's more short run, more variable, more digital. The Japanese spirit is all about going from the smallest bit to the largest finished product, all in-house. Everything from the rollers to the circuit boards are produced right here. It was in 2019 when we held the first "Think Smart Factory" in Kyoto, Japan. What we want to show, automated solutions integrated from prepress to your press to your finishing in order to optimize your workflow. And what our workers can do during assembly is they can call those little robots to go to the warehouse, bring the necessary parts that they need. Our customers want to really feel the paper for themselves. They want to see the finished product. Here, the machines operating. As manufacturers, we want to present solutions and hear from our customers. Right now that's not always an option. Since the beginning, we've been adopting the newest technologies to be able to replicate that experience. They never expected that they would get this high quality. It's also opening up new doors. Because we get to take them on tours of our facility. Which you would never get to do when you're just at a trade show. Right now, we have a new training zone. Where we can have people from all over the world come and get hands on training with the machines. But when that's not an option, we have a training team here to help them out when they're in a pinch.

Mathias Erlandsson · Over The Skype · OM...

When we talk about the smart factory approach in the print sector, the starting point is a functioning ERP system that is specifically geared towards future requirements. State-of-the-art cloud technologies open up completely new perspectives, as Mathias Erlandsson, founder and CEO of Omikai Systems AB explains in an Over the Skye conversation with Andreas Weber, CEO INKISH D-A-CH. "The requirements in Sweden are very similar to those in the DA-CH region“, explains Matthias. It depends on ease of use, transparency in all areas and a kind of omnichannel availability of the structured data that is dedicated to the needs of a successful and sustainable print business. It’s not only about production, but also management and administration, and above all about a much better go-to-market. The most important thing is not to have to deal with technology any more, but rather to develop the right digital mindset: Open, flexible. thinking ahead, geared towards the context and collaboration. The two conversation partners consequently open a dialogue that anyone interested can join. To establish a smart factory a digital mindset and 360-degree business solutions are needed. We present our interpretation of a smart factory with the goal of full automation of repetitive task and a self-optimizing production. The scope is not limited to the digitalization of production and print data workflows or to automate production lines with smart and connected machines but includes the sales process, customer communication and enterprise resource planning. To make it tangible, we discuss a potential end-2-end business solution using the example of a personalized face mask and cookie box from the creation of a business idea to the shipped product – from Pixel to Output.

English Subtitled. Technology development in the graphic arts sector is in full expansion. Smart factory, Print Industry 4.0 focuses on digital technologies that facilitate the inter-connectivity between printing companies among themselves and those with their preferred “strategic” EXTERNAL partners. Classic models that acted as intermediaries between supply and demand, buyers and sellers, are being replaced by scenarios of transparent networked digital technology. The result: Suppliers, producers and consumers find each other (to a large extent) automatically. Business processes, services, product offerings and communication will also become transparent and interactive in equal measure. What does this mean in concrete terms for the graphic arts industry in Europe? Well, the focus is shifting from the usual INTERNAL optimizations and digitization of our value creation and production processes (rather the 3.0 model), to OPEN and EXTERNAL networked Industry 4.0-compliant “Partnerships”, with those who can deliver added value, expertise and connectivity in the graphic value chain. All this under the collective name “Print 4.0”. At the Think Smart Factory Event in Kyoto, we found this presentation of a simple-to-use screen printing solution - also produced by Horizon. Everybody talks about highly technical solutions and the move to digital print. Still, for hobbyists and for small shops, the basic investment and the time to produce a garment with print isn't high or time-consuming. This film also shows the craftsmanship that is the foundation of many of the products we produce. We like this short video showing t-shirt print 100% analogue.

The conversation was about the following questions: - What is it that drives you? How do you get it? - Where are we standing? Where do we have to go? - What exactly is important about the #SmartFactory? What is it all about? - What are the benefits for print shops? - What are the total findings from the webinar series? - What are the most important recommendations for action that can be derived? The webinar concept is very extensive and quite complex. But it's not just a topic from experts for experts. What is the best way to get started in order to optimally deal with the situation? Our colleague Rainer Wagner from LATAM noted that the topic of AI / artificial intelligence was neglected. Is that correct? Is it still too far from thinking in the print industry? How will you and Yves follow up on the topic? What happens next? The answers are extremely conclusive and extremely interesting. But see for yourself! --- Over The Skype mit Jacques Michiels, CEO INKISH Benelux https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacquesmichiels-benelux/ Die INKISH Webinar-Reihe zu #SmartFactory / Industrie 4.0 im Team von Yves d'Aviau de Ternay, CEO INKISH France, Morten B. Das Gespräch rankte sich um folgende Fragen: - Was treibt Euch an? Wie kommt ihr drauf? - Wo stehen wir? Wo müssen wir hin? - Was genau ist am Thema #SmartFactory wichtig? Was verbirgt sich dahinter? Was passiert als nächstes? Die Antworten sind äußerst schlüssig und hochinteressant. Aber sehen Sie selbst!
