Built for the Customers Who Needed It Ye...

Ask John Abbott where Abbott Label will be in five years, and you probably won't get a five-year plan. That isn't how he runs the company. Markets change. Customers change. New opportunities appear. RFID wasn't necessarily part of some perfectly mapped strategy years in advance, but today the business has grown so quickly that Abbott Label already needs additional equipment. Flexible packaging may be next. For John, the ability to react is more important than pretending everything can be predicted. Abbott Label operates five plants and sells exclusively for resale. The facilities share much of the same core capability, allowing the company to stay close to customers and move work where it makes the most sense. And speed is a major part of the company's identity. While some larger suppliers may work with lead times measured in weeks, Abbott Label has built its business around customers who need something tomorrow — or preferably yesterday. Stock materials, ready-to-ship products, similar capabilities across plants, and a production culture focused on throughput allow Abbott Label to turn many jobs around in just three to five days. That also makes software increasingly important. With five facilities, production planning isn't simply about optimizing one plant. Abbott Label needs visibility across the organization — and that is one of the reasons the company is moving forward with CERM. But John is also very clear that implementing an MIS isn't only a technology project. It's a people project. Abbott Label has employees who have been with the company for more than 25 years. Introducing new processes means helping experienced people change familiar ways of working while bringing younger, digitally native employees into the same environment. The company has therefore spent considerable time preparing and educating its teams before the new system becomes part of everyday production. And that perhaps says quite a lot about John Abbott himself. He knows presses. He knows what they should sound like when they're running properly. He knows what operators and equipment are capable of. But as Abbott Label has grown, his job has increasingly become less about operating machines and more about creating the environment where other people can succeed. In this INKISH film, Morten B. Reitoft talks with John Abbott about family, leadership, five plants, RFID, flexible packaging, CERM, managing change, customer service, and why Abbott Label has built its business around one simple reality: Customers rarely call because they need something in six weeks. They call because they need it now.

Yoji Otsuka is the General Manager, Sales for Screen Graphic Solutions. In this conversation, he speaks over his American name "Joe" that he also uses on his business card, but more importantly how Screen has become one of the leading and most prominent suppliers of Inkjet presses. Screen Graphic Solutions was founded in 1943, but has roots back to 1868 - so what did Screen do before producing Inkjet machines? Yoji "Joe" Otsuka explains that the legacy of Screen's products and services are important elements in why Screen has become so popular. As we mentioned on numerous occasions before - we LOVE the Conversations format where editor Morten Reitoft have a longer and always very friendly conversation with a guest. Building a Packaging Powerhouse Through ...

Paul Densley, Managing Director of Castle Color, shares his journey from the newspaper print industry to leading one of the UK’s most respected and technically advanced packaging companies. In this film, Paul talks openly about Castle Color’s philosophy of people, process, and technology, and how that mindset has shaped everything from investment decisions to customer relationships. He explains why Castle Color focuses on being an embedded supply partner, how continuous training and process understanding sit at the core of the business, and how technology is used to enhance people rather than replace them. The conversation goes deep into Castle Color’s expertise in fiber-based packaging, including cartons, advanced barrier coatings, and highly specialized blister card technologies that are guaranteed to seal. Paul outlines the company’s diverse customer base across food, healthcare, hygiene, personal care, and sporting goods, and explains why the type of packaging matters more than the size of the customer. Paul also reflects on Castle Color’s disciplined approach to machinery investment, including rigorous testing, supplier comparisons, and the long-term impact of choosing the right technology partner. He shares real-world experience of consolidating production onto fewer presses while increasing productivity, retaining and retraining staff, and building strong, long-term relationships with suppliers. Looking ahead, Paul discusses the future of fiber-based packaging, sustainability, and how Castle Color plans to continue pushing the boundaries of packaging technology and design over the next decade.

Buddy Kramber & Erik Norman · The B...

Before drupa, INKISH had a LONG but exciting trip in the US, and on a cold (very) Saturday morning, we met up with Buddy Kramber (VP Operations, The Bernard Group) and Erik Norman (President, SwissQprint North America) for an interview about the acquisition of SwissQprint printers. The Bernard Group is one of the most amazing printing companies we have visited - and this was our second visit to Chanhassen-based printing- and much more. Six years ago, we saw an incredible automated company with incredible growth that has continued and, according to Kramber, will continue. Investing in SwissQprint along with the AGFA and EFI printers (as far as we remember), the SwissQprint adds a layer of gamut to the production as it can produce with special colors and superior quality. Interesting to see how customers also look at options that can only be produced on the SwissQprint printer.

Bruno Müller CEO Müller Martini

The interview features Morten B. Reitoft from INKISH speaking with Bruno Müller from Müller Martini about the significant transformations the company has undergone over the past 35 years. Bruno Müller discusses the evolution from his early days in the newspaper division to adapting to major shifts in the industry, particularly the decline in newspaper production and the rise of digital printing technologies. Bruno highlights the company's focus on listening to customer needs and adapting its culture, products, and strategies to market demands. He emphasizes the challenges of managing spare parts for older machines, which were not originally designed to last as long as they have. This has necessitated a shift in the company's approach to production, moving towards modular designs that use common components to streamline operations and reduce complexity. The interview also touches on the recent acquisition of Hunkeler, describing it as a strategic fit that complements Müller Martini's strengths and enhances its product offerings. Bruno Müller notes the importance of evolving business models in response to digital technology advancements, which is crucial for staying relevant and competitive in the printing industry.

In this interview, CEO Bruno Müller from Müller Martini speaks with Editor-in-Chief Morten B. Reitoft about the vision that is the driving force within the company. In 2000, the faster roll-based digital printers entered the market and Bruno Müller defined the vision of how to make machines that could do products of one. We, of course, ask if this isn't where we are now, and Müller smiles and says it can still be much better - so dear printers and binders, more to expect in the future - excited :-)

Books of one, way before that term was even invented. Over capacity on purpose, and with the intention of being the best, the largest, the fastest, and the strategy paid off. Bridgeport National Bindery is still binding books one, but today, with the newest and most innovative technology, and with a huge bindery, the company can produce pretty much everything. Everywhere in the plant, you see signs in multiple languages, also showing the many different cultures working side-by-side under one roof, but we are here to talk to Bruce F. Jacobsen. Despite his age, he knows pretty much all processes, and though he could stay home and enjoy his third age, he comes to work every day, and seeing him supporting workers on every station with his knowledge is a blast - but why not, enjoy the film we did?

Brook + Whittle — Matching the Right Tec...

Brook + Whittle has grown into one of North America's leading packaging companies, producing labels, shrink sleeves, and flexible packaging across a network of 12 operations. But scale alone isn't the strategy. Each facility has different capabilities and specializations — from flexo and digital to short-run, long-run, e-commerce, and specialty applications. The opportunity, according to Eric from Brook + Whittle, is to use that network intelligently and match each customer's work with the technology, location, and production method that makes the most sense. At Labelexpo Americas in Chicago, Morten B. Reitoft meets Eric Rivard at the Gallus and Heidelberg booth to talk about Brook + Whittle's continued investments and its long-standing relationship with Gallus. That relationship is now expanding with the addition of a Gallus One. The decision wasn't simply about buying another press. Brook + Whittle worked with Gallus over several months, testing real production jobs and evaluating where the technology would best fit within the group's manufacturing network. Existing experience with Gallus Labelmaster presses also played an important role in the decision. For Brook + Whittle, digital, flexo, and hybrid technologies aren't competing philosophies. They are tools that allow the company to choose the most productive and cost-effective manufacturing route for each application while maintaining the color consistency and quality demanded by major brands. Sustainability is becoming another increasingly important part of those conversations. As Extended Producer Responsibility requirements develop across the US, Brook + Whittle sees an opportunity to help brands make better packaging decisions around recyclability, materials, and long-term packaging strategies. And behind all of this sits another important element: automation. With multiple production sites, automating prepress, production workflows, and data exchange is essential if Brook + Whittle wants to optimize capacity across the entire network rather than focusing on each plant individually. In this INKISH film, we talk about growth through acquisition, multi-site production, Gallus technology, digital versus flexo, sustainability, automation, and why the future isn't necessarily about choosing one printing technology over another. It's about choosing the right technology for the right work.

Brodnax invests in Eagle Systems and mor...

What was supposed to be our California Cruising tour also took us to Dallas in Texas, and lucky us, as this allowed us to meet with Jim Singer from Brodnax21C. Brodnax is a General Commercial printing company with both digital and analog equipment. The company has specialized in trading cards and high-end printed products, and as they are an Eagle Systems customer, Mike King and Ellen Manning asked to stop by to see how they utilize the Eagle. And that was a great experience to see and understand why Jim and his team invested in cold foiling. Brodnax has also agreed to invest in a Landa Press in a new DURST vast format machine and has on order a new SCODIX 106 HD machine - and I understand from Jim Singer that even more signatures are on their way for more equipment. Efficiency and a firm belief in the future are what I see when visiting Brodnax - Super lovely people, and super great to see print striving.

Brian Euclide Over The Skype TEC Mailing...

TEC Mailing Solutions is, according to Brian Euclide, the only provider in the US, able to provide mail data-cleaning, and other services related to addresses in the US, online. Not only online but also via an intensive set of API's that enable their customers to integrate their own systems. Being a cloud-based supplier, you may have seen both Brian Euclide and his colleague Scott Eganhouse at various trade-shows where it's become kind of trade-mark to see the company's employees dressed in cloud-patterned suites. Great gimmick. Great guys, and well - sounds like their solutions could be interesting for more to dig into. As with all our 'Over the Skype' interviews, quality is limited to bandwidth, web-cams, and ability to literally LIVE mix the conversations. However, it works, and with Over the Skype, we will bring you more than 20 exciting people, and angles on the industry as it is right now. Enjoy!
